With great warmth – She was only 19 years old when Joana Mallwitz stepped in at short notice in the orchestra pit and saved an opera performance. The Heidelberg ensemble was already aware at that time that an extraordinary career was beginning here. Just a few years later, Mallwitz became the youngest chief conductor in Europe. Since her celebrated debut at the Salzburg Festival 2020 with Mozart's "Così fan tutte," she has been one of the outstanding international conductors of her generation. In 2019, she was named "Conductor of the Year" by the magazine "Opernwelt" and awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2023. Since the 2023/24 season, she has been at the helm of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Mallwitz appreciates the openness of the historically rich sound body: "There is a good foundation of risk-taking, openness, and curiosity – I like that." Even before her appointment, she got to know the orchestra through guest conducting, including works by Tchaikovsky, whose music she particularly loves. "There is, on the one hand, this traditional, dark, mid-range sound, with great warmth, a supporting cantabile, also with a certain harshness," describes Mallwitz the orchestra culture. "At the same time, they have a very fresh way of playing, a great love for detail, tempo, and articulation. That is a combination I seek everywhere in music-making." An ideal profile for Tchaikovsky's emotionally charged Symphony No. 5 as well as for Dvořák's powerful, melodious cello concerto. This is one of the favorite works of the French star cellist Gautier Capuçon, celebrated for his expressive depth, intensity, and cantabile line, qualities that particularly suit this concert.
