Vintage Roots Future Sounds! Founded in 2024 in Zurich by drummer and composer Alexis Malefakis and led by South African singer Nongoma Ndlovu, the Konkolo Orchestra is a ten-piece collective connected by their love for rhythm and flow. Their music draws on West African Afrobeat traditions while incorporating elements of jazz, rock, and funk – creating a sound that is both rooted and forward-looking. Their debut album "Future Pasts" (Rocafort Records) propelled the band onto the international stage, including a debut at the 2024 Montreux Jazz Festival and a sold-out concert at the Jazz Cafe London. "Future Pasts" and the first single "Blue G" were personally chosen by groove master Gilles Peterson as one of the best tunes of the year on BBC Radio 6 Music. "With the Konkolo Orchestra, we want to create music that radiates positive energy and touches on a deeper level," says founder Alexis Malefakis. "It's inspiring to see how many people connect with our sound. When ten people merge on stage and move with full energy, the spark immediately jumps to the audience – this enthusiasm is truly palpable!" On stage, Ndlovu directs the performance with her vocal presence and spiritual energy, while the ensemble provides a dynamic background: layered percussion drives the heartbeat, guitars, keyboards, and bass create melodic textures, and the brass section adds accents with their fanfares. Together, they deliver captivating and euphoric performances that feel immersive and communal.
