Description

In September 2026, the 200th anniversary of Johann Peter Hebel's death will be commemorated. A good occasion to turn to the work of the theologian, educator, and calendar maker. The course especially invites engagement with Hebel's storytelling art. With his calendar stories, collected in the «Schatzkästlein des rheinischen Hausfreundes» (1811), he made literary history. But his lesser-known calendar texts and clever retellings of biblical material also allow for astonishing discoveries. Those who read attentively quickly realize: the relationship between the story and its moral is often more complex than the pedagogical «Merke» wants to make us believe. Hebel's fondness for rogue stories corresponds with a cleverly rogue narration: «Der Hausfreund denkt etwas dabey; aber er sagt’s nicht.» The course offers, in addition to introductions to Hebel's life and (narrative) work, plenty of time for joint reading and discussion.

General Information

The Klostertag is dedicated to the work of Johann Peter Hebel on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his death. Participants have the opportunity to engage intensively with his stories and their complex moral concepts. The course takes place at the Kappel Monastery in Kappel am Albis, Switzerland.
