Welcome to Vienna – The cellist Raphaela Gromes has already proven her love for expeditions with her piano partner Julian Riem during the Freiburg guest performance in 2025. Together with the Canadian global citizen Sarah McElravy and the renowned Julian Rachlin, this time the journey leads to his hometown Vienna. No visit to the musical metropolis along the Danube is complete without Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: The Viennese publishers hoped for catchy, sales-boosting piano pieces with harmless string accompaniment. However, Mozart defied these expectations and challenged conventional ideas with clever dialogues like the E-flat major Quartet and his virtuosic motif weaving. From Gustav Mahler, the anguished first movement of a quartet from his Vienna Conservatory days can be heard, his only contribution to instrumental chamber music. The passionate A major piano quartet op. 26 was the first work Johannes Brahms premiered in his last hometown Vienna. Program:
