The City of Love hardly does justice to the complexity of the cultural metropolis Paris. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the big city with its density of great artists was a good starting point for all those who tried to be in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately, Emmanuel Chabrier never succeeded in this, quite the opposite: His opera Le roi malgré lui was largely marked by bad luck – the Opéra-Comique in Paris burned down a week after the premiere and Chabrier's opera never really gained recognition afterwards. Only the Fête polonaise played here soon found its way into the repertoire in its orchestral version. The opposite example is Igor Stravinsky's Firebird, as the first performance already caused waves throughout Paris, which not even the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev, who commissioned the work, had anticipated. After all, the unknown Stravinsky was neither his first nor his second choice. A lucky strike by Diaghilev and just the right thing for the Parisian audience. Others, like Sergei Prokofiev, had to take detours before they met with favorable reactions. In Chicago, Prokofiev's powerful attack and the unusual harmony of his third piano concerto left the concert hall largely cold. Quite different in Paris: His performance was a great success and artists like Maurice Ravel marveled at the composition and piano artistry. Prokofiev had found his city in Paris, even if this meant emigration from his missed homeland. Ensemble:
