Description

The tour begins with works from the Fauves and Cubism and leads through Expressionism and Surrealism to Constructivist forms. In the Stenen Zaal, one of the most beautiful rooms in the museum, the life work of Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti is made understandable. Since July 2020, the collection has been enriched with a total of 15 new works: the color-intensive French art of the early 20th century is now more strongly represented by important permanent loans featuring paintings by André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck. Two rooms dedicated to Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso are the result of a donation from the Christoph Merian Foundation from the legacy of Frank and Alma Probst-Lauber. Additionally, two new acquisitions by Gabriele Münter are on display: a painting from the early Murnau period and a reverse glass painting purchased by the Obersteg Foundation. Thanks to a donation, a work by Verena Loewensberg complements the Constructivist room at the end of the tour. Curator: Dr. Eva Reifert.

Klassiek Modern showcases classical modernism on the 2nd floor of Kunstmuseum Basel. The exhibition includes significant works from various movements, enriched by recent acquisitions and donations, providing a comprehensive overview of 20th-century art.
