Most of the time, relationships behind the theater curtain are quite different – or maybe not? Fred Graham and his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi are reunited on stage in Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew": She plays the feisty Kate, he the down-and-out student. Both already have new partners, but there's still a lot of sparks in the dressing room. That's why Lilli is furious when her flowers for Fred's new girlfriend Lois are accidentally sent to her. Enraged, the rebellious one wants to leave the theater during the performance! But there are also two gangsters who, due to a signature forgery by actor Bill, think Fred owes money to their boss. Fred now tries to save the show by claiming that the evening's earnings could be taken by the mafia. With guns at the ready, the play continues lively. As a "play within a play," Cole Porter, Samuel and Bella Spewack cleverly combine the comedy about a theater troupe – in which the female members are anything but submissive – with a musical adaptation of Shakespeare's partly bawdy classic. The boundaries between fiction and reality blur. The composer blends many styles – from 16th-century music to blues to waltz – and incorporates Shakespeare quotes in an original way.
