Karel Láník, the Forgotten Brno Architect of the 20th Century

Architect Karel Láník (1886–1956) is among the overlooked figures of Brno architecture. A native of Kunštát, he studied at the Czech Technical University in Brno under Professor Karel Hugo Kepka and then worked for many years in the Brno city construction office alongside prominent representatives of interwar architecture. As an architect, designer, and construction manager, Láník contributed to the creation of numerous buildings, primarily residential houses built by construction and housing cooperatives. His work represents the everyday nature of residential construction in rapidly growing suburbs and is an example of traditional interwar architecture, distant from modernist avant-garde. He does not abandon traditional architectural forms, yet he utilizes current stylistic trends and construction-technical processes.
