Jutta Koether's work is a large-scale attempt to "design a counter-history to the canon of modern painting," announced the Museum Brandhorst in Munich for the comprehensive solo exhibition Tour de Madame. Indeed, the artist, born in 1958 in Cologne and now oscillating between New York and Berlin, has significantly shaped the cultural landscape since the 1980s as a painter, performer, and musician, but also as an editor and publisher of the magazine SPEX and as the author of countless reviews, including for the journal Texte zur Kunst. Her painting began in the 1980s in the context of neo-expressive art in Cologne. Under the slogan The Hunger for Images, there was a global return to painting after years of conceptual art, rather than under terms like Neue Wilde Malerei or Transavanguardia. This movement, like painting in general, was predominantly shaped by male colleagues who often lived out the painter's cliché extensively. Jutta Koether countered this immediate, intense approach to painting with a multifaceted body of work: gestural brushstrokes and depictions of female bodies, as well as the lyrical appropriation of poetry and art history, combined with popular cultural elements. With her move to New York, she expanded this to include motifs from punk and noise culture. In doing so, she questioned the male-dominated canon of art history and drew on motifs from female artists. Jutta Koether's work has been experienced in numerous exhibitions in recent years, such as in 2007 at the Kunsthalle Bern, 2011 at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and 2018 at the Museum Brandhorst in Munich. At Villa Flora, Jutta Koether will focus on the early French modernism that was valued and collected there by Hedy and Arthur Hahnloser after the turn of the century.
