With Judith Hermann's debut "Sommerhaus, später" (1998), a new tone entered German-language literature. Sobering, laconic, almost terse, the author managed to describe the density and intensity of moods, unfolding an entire way of life between the lines.
From these stylistic beginnings, four collections of stories and two novels have grown to this day. Looking back from "Wir hätten uns alles gesagt" (2023), her Frankfurt poetic lecture, the first sentence of the story "Rote Korallen" sounds like a pointer, already indicating everything to come. A writing that lives on gaps, on the "precision of the vague" (F. A. S.), with which Hermann approaches her subjects, in a tentative movement between truth, invention, and mystery. And from her unique gift to preserve such.
"I write about myself. I write along my own life, I don't know any other writing," says Judith Hermann. This path through her work is followed tonight by the award-winning author in conversation with literature critic Insa Wilke. ---
