Josef Madlener: Blick in die Sammlung

Initially, this year's Blick in die Sammlung was meant to be just a series of insights into the holdings that have recently complemented the collection of the MEWO Kunsthalle. We will also continue this exhibition series in the cabinet (left). However, due to reorganization, an opportunity arose to additionally present a larger collection of works by the artist from Amendingen over the summer. Josef Madlener is a very versatile artist. It almost seems as if his work could be attributed to different artist personalities. His landscapes are expertly crafted representations of the pre-Alpine region in Unterallgäu. In addition, there are holy images and religious scenes (especially the Christmas story), often transposed into the local landscape and a rural environment, reflecting a deep Catholic folk piety. There are also mystical visions that lead into abstraction and legendary images with dwarfs, angels, and knights. In this exhibition, we display some of these works side by side to highlight visual connections and similarities. Josef Madlener (April 16, 1881, in Amendingen – December 17, 1967, in Amendingen) studied after an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Memmingen, at the School of Arts and Crafts, and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. With predominantly rural and Christmas motifs, he quickly achieved success as a painter and participated in numerous exhibitions. He also engaged early on with religion, occultism, and parapsychology.
The estate of Josef Madlener belongs to the collection of the MEWO Kunsthalle, where it is being art-historically processed and made accessible through exhibitions and publications.
