Description
Johann Rosenmüller Germany in the light of Venice | Ensemble Temenos From Leipzig to Venice, Johann Rosenmüller was one of the most original artisans of the meeting between German and Italian musical traditions. His German career was abruptly interrupted in 1655; he then moved to Venice, where he became a musician at Saint Mark's a few years later, then a composer at the Pietà. In the Sonate da Camera of 1667, dances and Sinfonie follow one another in a series of contrasts, while the Sonate a 2, 3, 4 and 5 stromenti da arco & altri of 1682 deploy a freer, contrapuntal and virtuosic writing. Throughout these works, the forms inherited from the German consort expand, transform, and increasingly incorporate the Italian instrumental language. In the works for five voices, two violins, two middle parts, and a bass, a dense and shimmering texture is drawn, carried by the richness of the continuo. Gravity and sensuality, the science of voices and the brilliance of the violin come together in a music of extraordinary richness, driven by a very personal sense of contrast, color, and movement. We invite you to enter this unique universe, where the gravity of the North meets the light of Venice. Behind the richness of counterpoint, dance, movement, and an astonishing freedom of tone constantly emerge: rare, generous, and deeply lively music that deserves to be rediscovered today.
