We read about Robert, Jos's oldest friend, who is navigating a marriage in Stuttgart, about Jos's sister Alice and her ex-husband Milusch, who came to Switzerland after the Prague Spring; Tess reports from Scotland, where she finds comfort in the offerings of the New Age movement. And in the middle, Tomek, the son of Alice and Milusch, who would rather have Tess as a mother – and rubs his eyes out of the present. Jens Steiner captures the struggle for friendship and love of an entire community, which begins to doubt their own life plans but also comes closer together in concern for one of them.
