The hundred-year-old pioneer of peace activism Edith Ballantyne reflects on a life dedicated to peace and wants to share her experiences before her voice is silenced forever. In 1938, she fled from the Nazis from the Sudetenland to Canada at the age of 16, where she lived as a refugee under difficult conditions. Through the support of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), she found a perspective—and later her calling. In 1969, she became Secretary General and later President of WILPF, with a formative influence on international peace work.
Through her close collaboration with the United Nations, her commitment to nuclear disarmament, her consistent integration of feminist perspectives, and her development of global networks, she continues to inspire people worldwide today.
In Imagine Peace, Edith calls for resistance against war, inequality, and intolerance one last time. She analyzes current conflicts, engages in dialogue with activists like Shirine Jurdi, Nina Potarska, and Madeleine Rees, and shares a life of struggle—and hope. Her legacy: peace is possible if we shape it together.
