VENEZIANA, the new program by Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala, which will premiere at the Berlin Philharmonie (Jan 2023), is dedicated to a place of longing - Venice. How could one not be inspired by the beauty and mysteries of the city, its architecture, art history? And by the artists and composers who created magnificent works in this city. Vivaldi and his "Four Seasons," Monteverdi and Italian opera in general, for which Iiro Rantala has a lifelong love. Iiro Rantala moves, as so often, on the border between jazz and classical music. And in a burst of moods: "On stage, he can become a dervish at the keys. But he can also sink quietly and concentratively into the music." The ideal partner for "Veneziana" are the four string players of the Galatea Quartet, with whom Rantala has performed on stage several times. The Zurich-based quartet is known for innovative, genre-crossing concepts – and thus the perfect complement to a program as shimmering and multifaceted as the city of lagoons itself. "Intelligence, humor, lots of sentiment, unpredictable ideas, and fine piano craftsmanship" (FAZ) - Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala is "a natural event at the keys" (Jazz thing). With the anarchic Trio Töykeät, he made the jazz stages of Europe and far beyond insecure for almost 20 years. His subsequent ACT debut album "Lost Heroes" marked a turning point in his music. Where wild, unrestrained exuberance once reigned, Rantala now mainly seeks and finds the power of melody, harmony, and deep emotion. But the mischief always flashes through. And also his outstanding, classically trained piano craftsmanship. Rantala in many ways creates a balancing act: Celebrated by critics, among others with the annual award of the German Record Critics, the ECHO Jazz, the Finnish EMMA Award, and many more, but also a crowd favorite at hundreds, if not thousands, of concerts. In classical temples like the Berlin Philharmonie, Elbphilharmonie, Konzerthaus Berlin, Philharmonie Cologne, but also in jazz clubs and festivals across Europe. Solo, in a trio, or with a full orchestra. Between jazz, classical, pop, and Nordic song. With sentiment and melancholy, but also with lots of wit and charm. In short: a master of modern, boundaryless piano playing. Iiro Rantala moves exactly on the border between jazz and classical. "On stage, he can become a dervish at the keys. Besides the classical repertoire, the Galatea Quartet has always explored unusual terrain and designed innovative, genre-crossing concepts; crossover projects are not uncommon. Together, the four string players and Iiro Rantala will once again expand the classical realm with an exciting new element.
