How do indigenous people live in the jungle? What do they eat and drink? How do they spend their day? How do different indigenous nationalities differ across the Ecuadorian jungle? And why is it important not to place a shaman (or anyone else) on a pedestal and to treat them as normal people? I will share my story from three years of living in Ecuador, where I was accepted into five indigenous communities as a family member and could be part of their daily lives. I will present the indigenous people as I experienced them - with all their conflicts, differing perceptions of the world, and different values. I adopted some of their ways and had to stand firm on my own values regarding others. For the indigenous people, the jungle is home. It is not just nature where they go for a walk, but a place from which they draw to live in harmony and peace. I will describe my personal journey from idealizing shamans and indigenous people to the importance of taking responsibility for one's life and finding one's own path. The meeting will also include a traditional tobacco ritual inspired by Amazonian traditions. I will offer tobacco water brought from Ecuador. I will explain the significance of tobacco as it was shared with me by the people from the communities I lived with. After the lecture, I will offer the opportunity to join me in visiting indigenous communities and experiencing their simple way of life in connection with the jungle firsthand.
