Before World War II, in the 1920s and 1930s, Brno was one of the main centers of modern architecture, particularly due to the first functionalist buildings, whose photographs appeared in prestigious European architecture publications at the time. This not very long trail through the city center will lead you in the footsteps of the architects who gave Brno its modern face and created buildings still admired by experts and architecture lovers from around the world. You will be introduced to the works of Bohuslav Fuchs, Ernst Wiesner, and other figures of interwar architecture. You will see the famous Avion Hotel, the House of Art, the Moravian Bank, the Alfa Palace (passage), Zeman's Café, and other exceptional realizations that reflect the ideas and inspirations of leading figures of European modernism, such as Le Corbusier and Adolf Loos. You will learn why Brno became one of the centers of modern architecture, what technical and construction innovations were used in the buildings, and how the principles of spatial design changed. You will hear stories of exceptional buildings and personalities, touch original materials, and at the end of the walk in the perfectly preserved interior of Sedláček's Café, you can fully absorb the atmosphere of the time when Brno ranked among the centers of architectural avant-garde and was unafraid to be a step ahead.
