Description
As often as the Capulets have made peace with the Montagues, just as often it has been broken again. The children of the feuding families, Romeo and Juliet, nevertheless fall in love with each other – and must keep their love secret. Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" serves the two skilled opera authors Vincenzo Bellini and Felice Romani – who also wrote the libretto for Donizetti's "L’elisir d’amore" – only indirectly as a basis for their Tragedia lirica. In 1830, they created their own world of passions and encapsulated it in a highly emotional, equally enchanting musical drama: In our semi-staged performance, it is the sonic centerpiece. Two families who have been irreconcilably opposed for generations and cannot find ways to peace. They act in well-known patterns. Bellini and Romani focus on the last day of Romeo and Juliet. What they unleash can be understood as a romantic hero story, whose protagonist Romeo rebels against social structures. Family ties do not interest him, he is an outsider and rebel, he goes his own way. But that leads to a tragic death.
