Description

Here we are. Three strangers find themselves in an unknown salon: the cosmopolitan Estelle, the postal worker Inès, and the journalist Garcin. Sometimes a peculiar servant checks on them – or is he their guard? What is he looking at? And why are we actually here? There’s no way out, the door is locked, and even the bell for the servant doesn’t work! So, it’s a matter of enduring in this terribly chic cage, but it’s hard to escape the probing gazes of the others. Hell is other people, writes Jean-Paul Sartre. As the facades crumble, declarations of innocence and toxic cruelties flash through the room, revealing the turbulent pasts, their shame, and the morbid reasons that have damned the three to this elegant hell. Sartre's classic Huis Clos leads us nowhere but to this dreary purgatory, which is put into literal disarray by the directing duo Camille Charlotte Roduit and Sophie Flannery Prune Vergères at NEUmarkt. Building on the hopeless foundation — paranoia, oppressive boredom, that slight film of sweat on the forehead, heated stagnation — the directors unfold the underlying, almost physical working out of the characters against each other. Surrounded by angles, forced to slip, stumble, and fall, trapped between voices from the walls and encroaching memories, our ENSEMBLö enters the devilish void, where time strangely passes. An eternal dance of death: sometimes faster, slower, racing, slower, pausing — until the attempts of the people to break free, their longing for freedom, spill over into the piece itself.
