In Henry IV, William Shakespeare explores the tensions between duty and freedom, between political ambition and the quest for authenticity; alliances are woven and then broken, and comedy is closely intertwined with tragedy.
King Henry IV, the aging and ailing ruler of England, faces rebellions orchestrated by Henry Percy, known as Hotspur. His son, Prince Hal, heir to the throne, prefers to indulge in noisy nights at the taverns of London, surrounded by thieves, drunks, and the flamboyant Sir John Falstaff. When war erupts, Hal duels Hotspur and kills him, thus proving his worth. Upon his father’s death, Hal ascends to the throne and renounces Falstaff, accepting the solitude of power. The new king, Henry V, is now serious and determined.
Mirror of our time, also fractured and overflowing, the world of Henry IV wavers between court and underworld, between exercising power and the vertigo of debauchery. Telling Henry IV will probably not save the natural order, but it can still offer a moment of lucidity and light.
