Handeck: Hydropower Pioneers is an impressive guided tour of the Handeck 1, 2 and 2A power plants. Visitors experience a journey through three generations of hydropower. Construction of the first KWO power plant began at Handeck in 1925, and other plants were added later. Today, the tour shows how electricity production from hydropower has developed over around 100 years and the importance of these plants for the energy supply.

During the tour, you will walk through the impressive power plant facilities and partly through underground tunnels. It becomes clear how much pioneering spirit, technology and precision is behind the use of hydropower. Participants gain an exciting insight into the history of the power plants, the development of the technology and the special significance of the Grimsel region for Swiss electricity production.

A particular highlight of the tour is the crystal exhibition in one of the tunnels. On display there are impressive crystals that were found during blasting work for the replacement construction of the new Spitallamm dam. The tour thus combines technology, history and nature in a very vivid way.

The tour lasts around 1 hour and 30 minutes and takes place largely on foot and partly underground. As some stairs have to be climbed, a good physical condition is recommended. Sturdy shoes and a warm jacket are advisable, as the temperatures in the facilities are rather cool. The tour is suitable for anyone who would like to find out more about hydropower, the history of the KWO and the impressive technology inside the Grimselwelt.
