Grimsel Hospiz: Grimsel Undergrund is an impressive guided tour deep into the underground of the Grimsel world. The tour combines a ride on the little hospice train, a visit to the Grimsel 2 hydroelectric power station and a tour of the unique Gerstenegg crystal chasm. Visitors gain an exciting insight into the underground world of hydropower and experience places that are not normally freely accessible.

The tour starts at the Grimsel Hospice visitor center. From there, the Hospizbahn takes you over the Spitallamm dam and down into the underground. After a short time, participants reach the Grimsel 1 power station and then take the tunnel bus to the Grimsel 2 pumped storage power station, which is located deep in the Grimsel granite, around 500 meters below the Oberaarsee and around 100 meters below the Grimselsee. This makes it particularly impressive to see the dimensions behind the production of electricity from hydropower.

A particular highlight of the tour is the visit to the Gerstenegg crystal fissure. This was discovered in 1974 during tunnel construction and was placed under protection shortly afterwards. The Kristallkluft is considered a kind of treasure trove of the Grimsel world and shows in a fascinating way the natural wonders hidden deep in the rock. The tour combines technology, nature and history to create a special experience.

The tour lasts around 2 hours and takes place largely on foot and partly underground. As some stairs have to be climbed, a good physical condition is required. The tour is not suitable for wheelchairs or baby carriages. Sturdy, sure-footed shoes and a warm jacket are recommended, as the temperatures in the facilities are between around 14 and 18 degrees.

The tour is suitable for people who are interested in hydropower, underground structures and the special nature of the Grimsel region. It impressively shows how technology and the mountain world are linked and how electrical energy is generated and stored inside the Grimsel granite.
