Description
Flags, horses, and political dignitaries in historical costumes: at the end of the 19th century, historical parades were highlights of public life – for example, in 1876 to commemorate the Battle of Murten or in 1891 for the anniversary of the city of Bern. The elaborately staged parades left many traces: festival guides, programs, and other documents show how history was celebrated, staged, and made tangible – and at the same time shaped, sharpened, and used for political messages. At the Bern Historical Museum, we first discover the background stories of the parades. During the subsequent visit to the City Archive, documents from the period can be examined firsthand. A joint tour of the Museum Quarter Bern with Daniel Schmutz, curator, and Roland Gerber, city archivist. Meeting point: entrance hall of the Bern Historical Museum.
