Dazzling night figures, the sordid §218, compelling spousal murder, sobering immigrant fates, and housing shortages – in short: the general helplessness of the years 1924 to 1933 is discussed at the Berlin court. But also tangible is the triumph of the “nationalistic idylls,” i.e., the infiltration of the judiciary by the Nazis.
In the middle of the courtroom sits the Jewish journalist and writer Gabriele Tergit from Berlin, observing and reporting. And the whole city eagerly follows her lucid “sketches from the courtrooms” in the Berliner Tagblatt or Die Weltbühne. Flanked by guitar music and cinematic everyday scenes of the Weimar Republic, the tragedies of purity, gossip, and defenselessness transport us to a time that perhaps is not so distant.
