Description

At the State Theater Ankara, the premiere of a new play ends with thunderous applause. On stage, among others, is actress Derya, the author of the play is her husband Aziz, a university lecturer and dramaturg. The day after, when an anti-regime demonstration takes place on the streets of Ankara and Aziz encourages his students to participate, the response from the authorities is swift: he is dismissed without notice, and his play is removed from the schedule. The family then flees to Istanbul to Aziz's mother and tries to reorganize their lives there. Director İlker Çatak is among the most prominent German-Turkish directors, alongside Fatih Akin, Thomas Arslan, and Ayşe Polat. His latest film, "Das Lehrerzimmer," was a major success with audiences and critics, depicting the school as a lens for societal developments. In "Gelbe Briefe," awarded the Golden Bear at Berlinale 2026, Çatak focuses on a couple under pressure from the arbitrariness of an authoritarian regime, forced to choose between their ideals and adaptation. A drama about courage and power that addresses the major socio-political questions of our time. By explicitly setting the story in German locations, the film broadens its warning against totalitarian forces beyond Turkish circumstances.
