René Jacobs, Conductor 1708, operas could not be performed in Rome during the papal fasting period. George Frideric Handel therefore created "La Resurrezione," an oratorio that rivals opera in its dramatic power. The libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece was created in the environment of the Accademia dell’Arcadia, a Roman learned society that advocated clarity and natural expression against the excesses of Baroque. The events between Good Friday and Easter morning are depicted. Angels, Mary Magdalene, John, and even Lucifer engage in a musical dialogue of doubt, hope, and triumph. The world premiere on Easter Sunday at the Palazzo of Marchese Ruspoli was a social event of the highest order. Arcangelo Corelli, himself a member of the Accademia, conducted the orchestra, the cast was luxurious, and the staging magnificent. Contrary to the rule of a ban on women’s performances, the role of Mary Magdalene was sung by a soprano. A reprimand from the Pope followed immediately. With "La Resurrezione," the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra continues its long-standing collaboration with René Jacobs, which has become one of the most influential partnerships in historical performance practice.
