Program:
Ludwig van Beethoven
Große Fuge op. 133 Ludwig Spohr
Nonett F-Dur op. 31 Felix Mendelssohn
String Symphony No. 11 F major Freiburger Barockorchester
Cecilia Bernardini Violin & Conductor Three works, three unusual ensembles: Ludwig van Beethoven's "Große Fuge" originally served as the final movement of a string quartet. At the request of his publisher, Beethoven published it as a standalone piece. Its premiere in 1826 caused some irritation; many contemporaries found it too bold, too complex. Today, it is regarded as a visionary late work, far ahead of its time. Ludwig Spohr's Nonet in F major op. 31 was composed in 1813 for an unusual combination of strings and wind instruments. Spohr, once one of Europe's most celebrated musicians, allows the nine instruments to dialogue equally, with no instrument dominating. Ten years later, the then 14-year-old Felix Mendelssohn composed the String Symphony No. 11, which also features percussion. A symphonic form for strings and timpani, written by a young composer with remarkable maturity. Additional information:
