Freiburger BarockConsort Composing women were not uncommon in the 17th and 18th centuries – quite the opposite. In numerous women’s monasteries, a guild of female composers developed, who wrote sacred compositions for liturgical use and sometimes even instrumental works. Among them, Isabella Leonarda is particularly significant. She lived in the Ursuline monastery in Novara and wrote the texts for her motets herself. She was also the first woman in music history to publish a collection of sonatas. In the secular realm, female composers also repeatedly stepped into the spotlight and celebrated great successes, e.g., Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre. She was personally protected by King Louis XIV and in 1694, as the first woman in France, composed an opera that premiered in Paris: "Céphale et Procris". Together with soprano Anna-Lena Ebert, the Freiburg Baroque Consort exclusively dedicates itself to composers of the (early) Baroque and thus gives them the stage that was long denied to them.
