In 1721, Johann Sebastian Bach sent six concertos titled "Six Concerts Avec plusieurs Instruments" to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg. The Margrave likely never performed them and never paid Bach. The manuscripts lay dormant in the archive for decades and only became known as the "Brandenburg Concertos" in the 19th century. The secret of this collection lies in its astonishing variety. No concerto is alike; each unfolds its own sound world. Horns and oboes characterize the first concerto, while a trumpet, pushing the limits of playability, defines the second. The third is dedicated to strings, while the fourth features two recorders at its center. In the fifth concerto, the harpsichord emerges from the continuo with a long cadenza, taking on a solo role, marking Bach as one of the fathers of the piano concerto. The sixth concerto does without violins and gains a dark, warm timbre through violas and gambas. Six concertos, six sound worlds, and an evening that reminds us that this music had to be rediscovered before it began its triumphant journey. Additional information:
