The ambitious Swiss scientist Victor Frankenstein has discovered the secret of life. But as he creates a human being from body parts, he is overwhelmed by disgust for himself and his creation – and he flees. From then on, the abandoned creature roams the world and experiences only hatred and violence due to its difference. Only a blind old man takes care of the needy being and teaches it to speak, read, and think. But soon it is discovered here as well and expelled from the community. The initially innocent creature, longing for love, commits a terrible act of despair and sets out to find its creator: Frankenstein is to create a companion for the creature. However, when Victor thwarts this plan, it swears bloody revenge… Since its first publication in 1818, Mary Shelley’s novel "Frankenstein" has inspired countless artists – most recently director Guillermo del Toro in his visually stunning adaptation of the story from 2025. The award-winning English playwright, film, and radio author Nick Dear received great acclaim for his modern stage adaptation (premiered in 2011 at the Royal National Theatre with Benedict Cumberbatch among others). In his "Frankenstein," he explores, alongside the disastrous consequences of human scientific hubris and societal rejection of the "stranger," the question of who the real monster of the story is: the human or the creature he created.
