"Peace, love, unity and having fun" – that's what they say in HipHop, right? But who has fun, who is part of the unity? Who is included and who is not? Pia Ringel, Azuka Angulo, and Ida Winter resist in B-Girl Battles and talk about sexism, norms, and injustices they encounter. In harmony with the music, their sneakers dance across the floor. Their bodies form statements, whirl and scream, spin in circles, and slam the facts onto the ground. Peace, love, unity and having fun, sure. But for whom? B-Girl Battles is a breaking dance piece that reflects and challenges the status quo of our society with its sexist structures. The piece raises gender questions and makes them visible through personal stories. What expectations are imposed on us because of our (supposed) gender? Pia Ringel, Azuka Angulo, and Ida Winter address sexism and toxic masculinity. On stage, they reproduce and criticize the status quo and suggest how it could be made more feminist. In B-Girl Battles, structural, gendered grievances of society are made visible and thematized using the example of “Breaking” – or Breaking Battle.
