Like a lightning strike – When the postponed Yehudi Menuhin Competition was held again in 2021 due to the pandemic, one might have feared for the luster of this traditional competition. But the opposite happened – especially thanks to the violinist María Dueñas, born in 2002 in Granada, Spain. With "such captivating joy, spontaneity, ... with a brilliantly bright, vibrant tone and a smooth technical virtuosity," she impressed in the first round. In the final, her interpretation of Édouard Lalo's Spanish sparkling violin jewel was of such fiery intensity that it "shot through the screen like a lightning strike." This is how a reviewer from the British music magazine Gramophone remembered María Dueñas, who was named "Young Artist of the Year" in 2025. Since she began playing the violin at the age of six, the instrument has been an integral part of her life, the artist recounts. She enjoyed practicing, inspired by great role models and driven by the desire to develop a distinctive sound of her own. This authentic joy has remained with her despite rapid career advancements – and Lalo's virtuosic rhapsody still accompanies her today. María Dueñas returns to the Albert Concerts alongside the star conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada. His interpretations of Stravinsky have caused a stir internationally – and will undoubtedly resonate with the youthful, enthusiastic sound of his Colombian homeland. "Delightful, with what vitality and precision the young Colombians played," wrote Der Standard after the 2022 tour, during which the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia also performed in Freiburg, as in 2019. As with the last visit, a formation of young musicians will perform in the foyer after the concert – this time with a musical birthday greeting to the Albert Concerts. Program:
