Description

Corpus Christi is a public holiday in Fribourg and represents a very grand celebration in the city and countryside. Altars are set up on decorated canopies throughout the locality. A procession begins after the mass. The first communicants of the year are honored and parade with the parish priest (the Bishop in Fribourg), who advances solemnly carrying the monstrance. Then come the band and political authorities. The procession stops at each canopy to pray and sing, then returns to the church. The Feast of the Holy Sacrament or the Body of Christ, established by Pope Urban IV in 1264 at the request of St. Juliana, aims to solemnly give thanks to God for all the blessings of the Eucharistic bread. Former Swiss Guards from Fribourg are also present. Corpus Christi is celebrated on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday, 60 days after Easter. Currently, the official name of the celebration is Solemnity of Corpus Christi in Fribourg. The Mass is held at 9:00 AM in the courtyard of Saint Michael College. The procession begins around 10:30 AM. If weather conditions prevent outdoor celebration, the mass will be held in the church of the Cordeliers convent. Eight cannon shots are fired to mark this celebration. Route: Rue Joseph-Piller, rue de l'Hôpital, place Georges-Python, blessing at the canopy at the old Post Office, route des Alpes, route du Pont-Muré, rue Saint-Nicolas, the porch of the Cathedral where the faithful are invited to unite again in prayer with our bishop. From 9:00 AM, no cars can park along the procession route, on Notre-Dame square, and around Saint Nicholas Cathedral. Traffic is interrupted on the procession route from 10:00 AM. Corpus Christi is a public holiday in Fribourg. Shops, businesses, and administrations are also closed. Fribourg Tourism and Region are open that day from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
