Description

This iconic play by Molière portrays Argan, a wealthy hypochondriac bourgeois, manipulated by his doctor and apothecary as well as by his new mercenary wife. His fear of death leads him to place religious trust in medicine, even wanting to marry his daughter Angélique to a simple-minded young doctor. Naive and gullible regarding his health and wife, Argan is nevertheless unyielding with his daughter. The salvation of the household will depend on the boldness and cleverness of Toinette, the faithful maid. Will she succeed in opening her master's eyes before it's too late?
A ruthless satire of medicine and doctors, this comedy resonates particularly in our post-Covid era: oversized egos of some specialists, incomprehensible jargon to ordinary people, soaring healthcare costs, aggressive marketing by pharmaceutical companies, unnecessary prescriptions, and excessive medical examinations are the ongoing consequences of our fear of death and illness. But Molière also explores other aspects of human nature in his last play: selfishness, false empathy hiding purely financial interests, lies, and Angélique's almost feminist struggle to assert her life choices.
As usual, Molière tackles these very serious topics with devastating and omnipresent humor, and the modern and daring staging pays him a vibrant contemporary tribute.
