Description

34 years after his last opera, Guillaume Tell, Gioachino Rossini composed his Petite Messe solennelle, his "small solemn mass." The mass was originally small, as Rossini wrote it for vocal voices, two pianos, and harmonium. He only later orchestrated the mass so that – as he says – it would not be instrumented by Mr. Sax or Mr. Berlioz, who would not only kill the voices but also kill him himself.
In the magnificently orchestrated version, the solemn mass is the perfect highlight of the festival: romantic Rossini in baroque opulence.
