Fascination archaeology

Description

The permanent archaeological exhibition in the Historical and Ethnological Museum was completely redesigned in 2014 and the exhibition space was tripled to 390 m².

The exhibition enables diverse encounters with archaeology in the canton and city of St.Gallen. A main theme is the spectacular excavations that have been made in recent years, especially in Rapperswil, Weesen and the old town of St.Gallen. An interactive "Laboratory Archaeology" offers exciting answers to the question of how archaeology arrives at its findings in the first place: What can bones or plant remains, for example, tell us about the lives of earlier people? The archaeology library, games, historical costumes and the museum's educational program offer more in-depth encounters with these epochs. Changing presentations in the "Window of Cantonal Archaeology" provide information about ongoing or recently completed research.

The exhibition is a joint project of the Cantonal Office for Culture and the HVM. It is conceived and realized by Holzer Kobler Architekturen Zürich, together with the archaeologist Jonas Kissling.

The Fascination Archaeology exhibition at the Kulturmuseum St. Gallen showcases recent archaeological discoveries and research. Redesigned in 2014, the 390 m² space offers interactive displays, historical costumes, and an archaeology library, providing insights into early history and excavation processes.
