Faust I and II told in 120 minutes by only four actors - this is daring, experimental, and frighteningly contemporary. "Two souls, alas, dwell in my breast" – is one of the most famous lines from Goethe's "Faust". This is not only the best possible description of an inner conflict, but can also be read as a hint that Faust and Mephisto can be understood as two sides of the same person: two principles that sometimes unite and sometimes oppose each other. On one side, Faust, the researcher suffering under the narrow limits of science and wishing to be a god who can recreate humans and, not least, himself; on the other side, Mephisto, the player and trickster, who masters the craft of deception and appears as the personified license for transgression. In the staging by director von Maldeghem, Faust searches for eternal life on a virtual level, for the prototype of himself as artificial intelligence. Faust and Mephisto appear as two sides of the same coin. They repeatedly exchange roles throughout the story, merge, become alternately perpetrator and victim, observe and judge each other, and hold up a mirror. "The risk (...) surprisingly succeeds quite well. Salzburg now has a "Faust" again, where it is clear that someone has thought a lot of clever things."
