Deliberately, the production avoids the countless interpretations that the work has undergone in its over two-hundred-year history. The Lindau Zauberflöte plays in a fairy tale land. And not only because the fairy tale genre intentionally employs logical breaks and paradoxes to truly enchant. Every viewer is invited and encouraged to find and invent their own story within the Zauberflöte. THEATER HISTORY
The world premiere took place on September 30, 1791, at the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden - a Viennese suburb stage. By October 1791, the Zauberflöte had nearly twenty performances, and in the following months, it remained successful on the Vienna stage. A year later, on October 25, 1792, it was performed successfully in Prague, followed by performances in Munich, Frankfurt am Main in 1793, and finally in Berlin and Weimar in 1794.
