Alexander Skrjabin's 2nd Symphony defies precise classification. On one hand, it is characterized by late Romantic heroism reminiscent of Wagner and Tchaikovsky, on the other hand, it already shows hints of Skrjabin's radically ecstatic style in his later years. This duality makes the symphony so popular, as it offers something for every musical taste.
On the other hand, Sergei Prokofiev follows a completely different tonal language in his 1st Symphony, approaching the music of Haydn and Mozart with humor and irony. As a contrast between the two already quite different works, Béla Bartók's last, unfinished composition is played, his heartfelt Viola Concerto from his final year of life. You will experience the solo violist of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra: Ricardo Gaspar!
