When asked about her favorite conversation partner, Christiane Hoffmann spontaneously said: Nino Haratischwili. And Nino Haratischwili? Immediately agreed. Both have not known each other personally so far. Thus, the festival is once again pleased to facilitate the meeting of authors. Known for "Alles, was wir nicht erinnern. Zu Fuß auf dem Fluchtweg meines Vaters" (a surprise bestseller with over 140,000 copies), Christiane Hoffmann now tells her own story very personally: It is the story of a young woman who studied in Leningrad during the fall of the Berlin Wall and hopes that Russia's cultural awakening may be a driver for the country's democratization. Many shared this hope, and Ukraine also plays a role, a narrative about "The dreams we had." "The dreams we had" could also be the title of Nino Haratischwili's great Georgian trilogy about independence efforts, wars, and civil wars after the end of the Soviet Union. With her new book "Die fremden Paradiese," she continues her engagement with the dream of freedom – two books and two remarkable authors who tell very concretely and personally about the tragic failure of the struggles for freedom in post-Soviet times. Because at the latest with Russia's invasion of Ukraine (2022), these dreams have collapsed like a house of cards, a war that endangers all of Europe. "Europa wach auf!" (Europe, wake up!) calls Nino Haratischwili in her essays. "Did we do something wrong? What?" asks Christiane Hoffmann.
