Description

Beethoven dedicated his 5th Piano Concerto to Archduke Rudolph of Habsburg, who even performed the piano part at the premiere. Truly imperial is not only the dedicatee but also the heroic character of the concerto. This is evident from the very first measures, when the piano confidently interrupts the orchestra with powerful chords. Later, Beethoven even uses a fortefortissimo (fff) for the first time in music history. In stark contrast to Beethoven's heroism, Sibelius dedicates his 5th Symphony to an introspective naturalism. He aimed to give the symphony an 'earth-related' form. This is particularly evident in the 3rd movement. A beautiful melody sounds in the horns, inspired by swans flying over his house.
