Description

In conversation with his translator Claudia Hamm, Emmanuel Carrère introduces the new novel "Kolchose" (Matthes & Seitz). In 2023, his mother, Hélène Carrère d’Encausse – France's most famous Russia historian and chairwoman of the Académie française – dies, and shortly thereafter her husband Louis. While clearing out her apartment, Emmanuel Carrère discovers his father's research into the extensive family tree, and he begins to trace the life, love, and suffering stories of four generations across Russia, Georgia, the German exile, and France through the upheavals of the 20th and 21st centuries. "The world can go to the dogs, and obviously it does, but what we have learned precisely on our small patch, in our small time frame, and in our small existence that was assigned to us to inhabit, remains the métier of people like me.
