Description

When Franziska Denk hears the word «cold», she sneezes. At «leprosy», small pieces of skin come off, and at «plague», her skin throws up black blisters. She grows up in the environment of the Vienna Circle, shortly thereafter the family emigrates to the USA. In Otto Mandl, a brilliant mathematician and logician, Franziska finds her soulmate. She learns to immunize herself against her suffering with words from dead languages, and the two research together to all conceivable limits for the perfect language.
Schleifen is full of stories that are crazy, quirky, funny, and absurd: Besides Franziska Denk and Otto Mandl, there is Franz Kafka, who has to answer in a plagiarism trial, or a group of people stranded in the middle of a roundabout who develop their own language, culture, and religion. Elias Hirschl (*1994, Vienna) plays with facts and fiction and thus creates a delightful and clever reading pleasure about the power and influence of language on our lives. Hirschl is an author, musician, and slam poet. He has been awarded, among others, the Reinhard-Priessnitz-Preis and the audience award at the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize.
