ELDER Through Zero Even after two decades of their existence, Elder remains an exceptional presence in the underground rock scene – a rare band capable of absorbing and reinterpreting influences from a variety of genres without falling into pastiche or losing their own identity. Over their twenty-year musical journey, Elder has perfected powerful riffs, melodic excursions, progressive structures, hypnotic grooves, and an ethereal atmosphere. On "Through Zero," Elder leverages this extensive experience to create perhaps their most immediate and captivating album yet, while also planting seeds from outside rock music within their progressive framework to take root and flourish. "Through Zero" was recorded over several months in Berlin in 2025 between tours and is the first album the band has not only self-produced but also mixed together with their long-time partner Richard Behrens. The album sounds more than ever like a full realization of the band’s creative intentions. Elder was founded around 2006 – no one remembers exactly when – in a small coastal town in Massachusetts by three long-time friends sharing a passion for hard, deeply tuned music. Over the years, the band has added a guitarist, lost a drummer, moved (mostly) from the USA to Germany, played hundreds of concerts from small clubs to arenas worldwide, and released six full-length albums, four EPs, and two live albums. While this success story is not a prerequisite for anything, the twists and detours along the band’s winding path may explain why they refuse to stand still. It describes the property of a frequency to pass through zero and go into the negative. Although it is not a philosophically rooted concept, it appeals to me on a conceptual level: Zero is not an end, but a midpoint on a partially invisible path. The interpretation is open: the journey is the goal, the beginning and end can be arbitrary, or perhaps reality is simply less linear than we like to think. The songs on the album deal with related themes that reflect my own observations and personal philosophy. Life and death, frustration and fear, helplessness and hope – all of this exists along the same "signal path". Participants: Elder
