The beats of legends – newly composed, newly staged Every era has its musical revolutionaries. In their younger years, they often sat at the drum set. The Rolling Stone Charlie Watts, the Beatle Ringo Starr, sound researcher Pierre Henry, or jazz greats Max Roach and Buddy Rich revolutionized drumming and shaped generations – whether through technical brilliance, stylistic innovation, or unmatchable charisma. They engraved signature beats into music history and advanced musical developments with drums. Leonie Klein embarks on her trail in "Drum Quotes." Iconic beats serve as the starting point for new sound worlds. Distinct grooves or characteristic fills mark the beginning of a percussive discovery journey that is both homage and continuation: what once made jazz clubs, large halls, and recording studios shake is reinterpreted here – and staged: with stories and anecdotes, the lives of great drummers are brought to the stage. A mixture of musical virtuosity and scenic performance emerges – and makes palpable how legends are born: on stage and far beyond. Leonie Klein (*1993) has dedicated herself to new music and established herself as a drum soloist. She has performed at the Berlin Concert House, Baden-Baden Festival Hall, and at festivals like ECLAT Stuttgart and the Darmstadt Summer Courses. Influential was her collaboration with composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Dieter Schnebel, and Péter Eötvös. Besides her concert activities, she develops her own interdisciplinary concert formats and is engaged in music education. She studied drums and music journalism at the Karlsruhe University of Music. Today, she works as a drummer, concert designer, and journalist for SWR2 and Deutschlandfunk Kultur. Additionally, after a cultural studies accompanying program, she works as a research associate at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. She was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation and was awarded, among others, the Mamlok Prize for performers of contemporary music. In the 2026 season, she was the first Artiste d’avenir – Future Artist – of the Mozart Festival Würzburg.
