Dreaming Things

Description

“I would once like to paint something that I’ve never seen before,” said Ilse Weber. This captures the emergence of dreamlike pictorial worlds in her work. At the same time, it points to the core of the exhibition “Dreaming Things” and the close connection many of the featured artists have to Surrealism. Bodies and objects are alienated, detached from their usual context, and imbued with new meaning.

With “Dreaming Things”, the Kunsthaus Zug highlights the works of women artists. Historically, its collection has been predominantly focused on male artists, but it also contains many exceptional works by women. The exhibition features works by Heidi Bucher, Trudi Demut, Miriam Cahn, Irma Ineichen, Meret Oppenheim, Lou Stengele, Josephine Troller, Hannah Villiger, and Ilse Weber.

The theme running through the entire exhibition is engagement with objects and bodies, with found objects and transformed items. Familiar objects are reimagined through artistic processes — ranging from everyday items to those with symbolic significance. The result is a surreal poetic of objects that gives them a voice and a life of their own.
