Description

At the Museum Burg Zug, history comes alive. Whether halberd or historical crafts, the exhibition allows guests to actively participate in the past. Comic girl Lili guides children through the exhibition. In the playroom, they can become knights themselves.

The winding castle on the edge of Zug's old town is the oldest secular building still preserved in the city of Zug and has an almost 900-year history. In the Middle Ages, the bailiff resided in the castle, and in later centuries, significant Zug families lived there. Since 1983, the historical museum of Zug has been located in the castle. It was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2017.

Interactive Permanent Exhibition
The permanent exhibition thematizes the history of the city and canton of Zug in the historical rooms. Visitors travel back in time. In the medieval room, knights and mercenaries await, as well as early medieval equipment to try on – not for the faint of leg, as depending on the era, a full suit of armor could easily weigh between 20 and 30 kilos - of course without weapons. More peace-loving visitors can feel the influence of the French nobility in the Landtwing cabinet or explore the former Zug drugstore Luthiger with products from grandmother's times.

The Unicorn Castle: Castle for Children and Families
Comic girl Lili takes families on digital or analog treasure hunts through the museum. Puzzles and tasks need to be solved, unicorns and other mythical creatures discovered in the museum. Those who have solved enough puzzles can dress up as they please in the playroom and become historical castle staff themselves or grab pencil and scissors in the studio. In the experience tour on the last Sunday of the month (dates available at www.burgzug.ch, always at 3 pm), an actress slips into the role of various historical persons. She takes families on a journey through time. Those who have not had enough history yet can also celebrate their own birthday in the castle with their friends.

Castle Courtyard, Castle Café and Apéros
It gets cozy in the castle courtyard. Two lindens provide soothing shade, two swings and deck chairs invite you to relax and be. The castle café offers fine Luthiger coffee, castle tea, or cool drinks. For a small hunger, there are fine regional specialties to enjoy, and of course, picnics are allowed. The castle courtyard can be rented for smaller events and apéros. The castle rooms are available to bridal couples for wedding photos outside regular opening hours upon request.
