Description
Mascha Kaléko started writing in Berlin in the twenties of the last century, publishing in newspapers from 1929. Her early poems are pointed sketches of everyday life in Berlin dialect. She made a name for herself, mingling with the greats of Berlin bohemia at the Romanisches Café. In 1933, her first book "Das lyrische Stenogrammheft" was published and was immediately well received. Her success as a writer was abruptly cut short with the Nazis' rise to power. As a Jew, she was no longer allowed to publish. In 1938, she left Berlin, but the city remained her fixed point of reference. In one of her last poems, "Bleibtreu," she writes about the street, "Forty years ago I lived here [...] Here was my happiness at home. And my distress. My child was born here. And had to leave. My friends and the Gestapo visited me here," ending with the question, "What remains of it? [...] an old wound unhealed." Dota Kehr is a Berliner, writes, sings, and has been performing with her band DOTA since 2003. They have recorded 16 albums and played countless tours at home and abroad. Dota strikes a chord with her time or several with her music, which jumps and dances, pauses, jumps from the construction site dock, swims, and dives, to the bottom, which is also the title of one of her most beautiful songs. She mixes folk and indietronica and occasionally flashes her love for Brazilian music. Her lyrics are touching through immediacy; Dota does not speak of the ivory tower but of the people here and now, and their small triumphs and great abysses, their inadequacies, trying to be close and move in society. She wins the Fred Jay Prize and the German Record Critics' Award, unwittingly writing small hymns, a racing bike for all lovers in the big city, no time for the climate protests movement. She makes album after album, always hoping her best song is in the future, earning the title of the hardest touring woman in German show business, performing with band and duo with Jan Rohrbach on guitar. At one concert, a fan hands her a small book, author: Mascha Kaléko. Dota is thrilled by the directness of the poems, the conciseness of the language, and plans to make music from the texts. She obtains permission from Kaléko's estate administrator and asks friendly songwriters if they want to join. Everyone is enthusiastic, and on this album, Dota sings songs alone, but also duets with old and new voices of the German music scene like Alin Coen, Hannes Wader, Karl die Große, and Max Prosa. The album was released in 2020 and stayed in the album charts for 8 weeks, a success. The tour was delayed until 2022 due to the pandemic but was celebrated even more by the audience then. It is a fortunate coincidence that Dota took up Kaléko's poems and turned them into songs. As Dota tells, Kaléko's texts are not about myths and distant spheres but about people; Kaléko speaks of cash patients, and Dota of pregnant women in hardware stores. It is therefore no surprise that Dota found it easy to lend her voice to these related texts. Dota and her band have given the poems an additional layer, new colors, sometimes contrasting with the text, and have achieved the feat that while listening to the songs, one does not think of lyric with musical accompaniment. Dota has saved Mascha Kaléko's texts for our time, even more: they sound as if they were written now, in this form. And of course, there was more to discover in poetry collections, essays, mixed recordings, and diaries of Kaléko. Enough for a second album, again with well-known collaborators. This time, the dress of music fits even better; Kaléko's texts move completely naturally and freely within it, sometimes in a classical song form with stanzas and refrains, sometimes a line repeating itself, until everyone has stuck the sentence "How nice it is to be alone" on their fridge. In 2027, DOTA will perform some selected concerts with this program. Including: Dota Kehr (vocals, guitar), Janis Görlich (drums), Jan Rohrbach (guitar), Jonas Hauer (keyboards), Wencke Wollny (saxophone), Antonia Hausmann (trombone). Songs from the two Kaléko albums and some pieces with her own lyrics will be heard. Acoustic, concertante, captivating!
