But what does freedom actually mean here? Is it Giovanni's freedom to desire any woman at any time without restraint? Or rather the Enlightenment idea of a society without class barriers? And how free are the people who try to resist their inner dependence on Giovanni? Mozart, together with Lorenzo Da Ponte, dared to look into the hearts of people and found hope, pain, desire, spirit, and wit there. The music makes people rich and pure at the same time – perfect conditions for director Árpád Schilling, who devotes himself entirely to the psychology and performance of the actors. It is also a piece for the Bern Opera Ensemble, which, together with our chief conductor Alevtina Ioffe, embarks on a search for freedom in the score.
