Description
After ten years as a reporter for ZEIT, Dmitrij Kapitelman knows them all: the beautiful, the ugly, the own, the foreign, the funny, and the sad sides of Germany. The homeland village of the murdered CDU politician Walter Lübcke. A warrant street in Offenbach? Eastern European Berlin during the Russian war against Ukraine.
In his novel "Russian Specialties" (Hanser Berlin, 2025), the Kyiv-born author who emigrated to Germany turns the bizarre distortions of reality of the present into the fantastic: Against the backdrop of the "Magasin," a shop for Russian specialties in Leipzig, people turn into oversized cigarettes, fish and machine guns start to speak, while the "damned tongue mother tongue" in the mouth of the warmonger lures the narrator's mother with TV lies. Kapitelman discusses his clever reports and touching novel with cultural mediator Natalia Herrera.
